SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Bernard Ellsworth “Bernie” Adams, Sr., 102, of Shinglehouse, on Thursday, August 8, 2026, in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, surrounded by his loving family. He was a cherished father, grandfather, grandfather and veteran.

Born November 22, 1923 in Hollidaysburg, PA, Bernie was a beacon of strength and humility, embodying the qualities of a true gentleman throughout his 102 years.

Bernie was the beloved son of Henry C. Adams and Ova Redden Adams. He grew up in Hollidaysburg where he attended and graduated from Hollidaysburg High School and developed a love for football that would mirror the teamwork and dedication he exhibited throughout his life.

A proud patriot, Bernie served his country with honor in the US Navy during World War II as a Gunner's Mate Third Class. He also was tasked with training other soldiers. He was commended with "conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty" when falling under attack by 20 enemy war planes. His service took him across the globe, with many memories of Europe and Dutch Barneo, although his primary station was in the Pacific Theatre. His experiences and stories from these years are treasured by his family and community, and he was rightfully recognized as the last surviving WWII veteran in Potter County.

In 1946, Bernard married the love of his life, Barbara J. Fetzer. Their union was one of dedication, spanning 74 years until Barbara’s passing. Together, they nurtured a family that grew to include 58 members and include

Pam (Raymond) Foster, Larry (Tami) Adams, Bernard (Debra) Adams, Jr., Amy (Michael) Antonioli, and Jeffery (Beth) Adams. Bernie’s legacy is lovingly carried forward by his nine grandchildren, Casey (Mike) Rix, Christine Boser, Tara (Troy) Vincent, Brady (Trisha) Adams, Larry (Jodi) Adams, Gwen (Michael) Davis, Ryan (Misty) Antonioli, Kaitlyn (Andrew) Leviner, Rachael (Tony) Riley; twenty-seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Bernie’s career was marked by dedication and hard work. He began his professional journey with the Pennsylvania Railroad before relocating to Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania in 1956. There, he contributed significantly to the former Dresser Clark Corporation until his retirement in 1987. His expertise was sought after, leading him to two one-month long trips to Alberta, Canada, to train employees—a testament to his skill and leadership. Even after retirement, Bernie continued to serve his community through various roles, including working as a custodian at the Oswayo Valley School District and maintaining positions at the Shinglehouse Borough and Dickinson Inc., at the former Hewitt Manor in Shinglehouse.

A man of faith, Bernard was a devoted member of the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church and a former member of the Masons. His commitment to service extended to his participation in the Shinglehouse Legion, where he served in the honor guard, exemplifying his dedication to his fellow veterans and his community.

Bernie’s life was rich with hobbies and interests that reflected his vibrant spirit. In his younger years, he found joy in hunting and fishing, and as an avid handyman, he took pride in refurbishing the family home and assisting neighbors with various projects. His hands were rarely idle, always finding purpose and satisfaction in helping others.

Bernie was predeceased by his beloved wife Barbara, two sisters and brother-in-laws, Vivian (Guy) Bess, Mona (George) Resig, and son-in-law Ray Foster.

His family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Sweden Valley Manor for their compassionate care and devotion to Bernard's time at the Manor as well as our mom Barbara. A special thanks to those who organized a memorable dedication in his honor, including recognition from Senator Chris Dush, Senator Doug Mastriano, and Representative Glenn Thompson, accompanied by the dedication of an American Flag flown over Congress. He was also honored by the UPMC Family Hospice of North Central Pa, American Legion, and PA Senator Cris Dush. Last September he and another veteran were honored at the WWII museum in Eldred, Pa for V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day)

Family and friends may call from 9am to 11am on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA, where funeral services will follow at 11am with Steve Resig, officiating. Burial will be in East Sharon Cemetery, Shinglehouse. A funeral dinner will follow for family members at the Shinglehouse American Legion.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bernie’s name may be made to Sweden Valley Manor Patient Activity Fund, 1028 E. Second Street, Coudersport, PA 16915 or to Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, 1364 SR 44S, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.

Bernie entrusted his care to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
