Maxine L. Rice “beloved mother, grandmother, and sister”

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa.---Maxine L. Rice, 87, of Shinglehouse, passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, from COVID.
Born on Tuesday, January 16, 1934, in Coneville, she was a daughter of Golden R. and Marjorie V. Stonemetz Calhoun. On May 21, 1955 in Elmira, N.Y., she married John M. Rice, who passed away on June 16, 2004.
Maxine was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, Class of 1950. She graduated in 1954 from the Arnot-Ogden School of Nursing in Elmira, N.Y. She later graduated from St. Joseph’s College in North Windham, Maine, with a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing.
Maxine was employed as a RN in the Arnot-Ogden Hospital in Elmira and later at the Olean General Hospital in Olean, N.Y., as a RN and later as a nursing supervisor, retiring in 1986.
For a period of time after her retirement and the death of her husband, Maxine resided in DeBary, Florida.
Maxine was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Shinglehouse. While living in Florida, she attended Mass at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in DeBary. She was a member of the American Nurse’s Association and a member of Potter County Red Cross.
She enjoyed numerous crafts. Her greatest love was her family. She enjoyed charity work consisting of her church, the food bank, and St. Anne’s Nursing Club where she took blood pressures and helped patients at doctor’s visits.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen J. (Larry Brown) Rice of DeBary, Florida and Christopher J. Rice of Shinglehouse; three granddaughters, Chelsie J. (Andy) Cornelius, Heather A. (Darren) Turner, and Kristen B. (Ronn) Thompson; two grandsons, Sean C. Rice and Scott A. Rice; a step-granddaughter, Casey Zawry; a step-grandson, Corey Willhoit; and nine great-grandchildren, Emily Cornelius, Holly Cornelius, Taylor Turner, Dylan J. Turner, Rylee Thompson, Reese Thompson, Reagan Thompson, Gabriel Rice, and David J. Rice, and two step-great-granddaughters; a sister, Gayle L. (Bernard) Zawrotny of Bath, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Rice; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Maxine was predeceased by a son, Daniel P. Rice; three brothers, Baby Calhoun, Dennis D. Calhoun, and Gary D. Calhoun.
Due to the COVID pandemic there will be no public visitation. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Theresa Catholic Church, Shinglehouse, on a date and time to be announced. Burial will be in Rathbone Cemetery, Coneville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church, PO Box 277, Shinglehouse, PA 16748; to a chapter of the American Heart Association; or to a chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Maxine entrusted her care to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
