Sophie A. Hardy “beloved mother and Nana”

PORTVILLE, NY---Sophie A. Hardy, 92, of Portville, passed away with her loving family by her side on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at The Pines, in Olean, NY.

Born on Sunday, August 21, 1932 in Cohoes, NY, she was a daughter of Arthur and Martha Thomas Hippensteel. She was married to Howard L. Hardy, who passed away on October 30, 1981.

Sophie was employed by the former Cooper Industries in Olean for many years until her retirement.

She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, watching television, playing cards, and putting jigsaw puzzles together. She was a die-hard Miami Dolphins fan. Sophie’s greatest love was her family, especially her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are five children, Susan J. (Butch) Coleman of Portville, Phoebe M. (Joe) Drake of Shinglehouse, PA, Pete (Cathy) Hardy of Bradford, PA, Art E. Werner of Ceres, NY, and Howard L. (Tammy) Hardy III of Tennessee; many loving grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Archie (Bev) Hippensteel of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Sophie was predeceased by three children, Danny Hardy, Delia “Sis” Sanchez, and Kevin Hardy; and a great-grandson, Tucker J. Dodd.

In keeping with Sophie’s wishes, there will be no public services. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.

Memorials in Sophie’s name may be made to The Pines of Olean, Resident Activity Fund, 2245 West State Street, Olean, NY 14760.

Sophie’s family has entrusted her care to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA.
