Fred C. Hobson “beloved father and grandfather”

FORT COLLINS, Colorado---Fred C. Hobson, 86, of Fort Collins, a former longtime resident of Shinglehouse, Pa., passed away in his daughter and son-in-law’s home on Thursday, March 10, 2022.

Born on Wednesday, July 24, 1935 in Sparta, Wisconsin, he was a son of Fred Lee and Cora E. Peterson Hobson. On September 27, 1964 in Norfolk, Va., he married Ella P. Wood at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Fred graduated from Sparta High School, Sparta Wisconsin in 1953. He served in the US Navy from Feb 1954 to June 1980, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer, receiving many awards and acknowledgments for his attention to detail and excellence. After retiring from the Navy, Fred was employed at the Olean General Hospital from 1980, retiring in Dec 2000.

Fred was a member of the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church, serving as a Financial Chairman, Treasurer, and Trustee. He was also a member of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 and a member of the Potter County Honor Guard. He also served as a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. He was an avid reader, & loved westerns. He liked to travel and try new things. He was always serving others.

Surviving are two sons, Christopher J. Hobson of Shinglehouse and Michael J. Hobson of Sharon, PA a daughter, Teresa L. (James) Jensen of Fort Collins CO, four grandchildren; a brother, Daniel Hobson; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife Ella; and two sisters, Catherine Hobson and Charlene Vanderplaats.

Family and friends are invited to call from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday and from 10am to 11am on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, where funeral services will follow at 11am with the Rev. Preston Hutchins, Jr., pastor of the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Bell Run Cemetery, Shinglehouse.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord full military honors on Thursday.
