SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa.---Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania mourns the loss of a remarkable individual, Patricia A. “Pat” Howard, who departed from this world on Sunday, June 11, 2023. Pat, known to her loved ones as a devoted mother, cherished friend, and compassionate community member, left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Born on April 25, 1931, in Olean, NY, Pat was the daughter of Lawrence and Byrdena Foote Washburn. Growing up in the close-knit community of Shinglehouse, she developed a strong sense of community values, which she carried with her throughout her life.

Following her graduation from Shinglehouse High School in 1949, Pat embarked on a career dedicated to serving others. She found her true calling in healthcare and worked tirelessly as a registered nurse for over four decades. Pat's innate compassion and unwavering commitment to patient care earned her the respect and admiration of both colleagues and patients alike. Her kind and gentle nature brought comfort to countless individuals during their most vulnerable moments.

Beyond her professional achievements, Pat was a dedicated member of the Shinglehouse community, actively involved in various organizations and charitable causes. She served as a loving and supportive Den Mother within the Cub Scouts, nurturing young minds and instilling values of leadership and camaraderie. Additionally, Pat contributed her time and efforts as a Mary Martha at the Methodist Church, embodying the principles of service and faith. She was also a valued member of Eureka Chapter #52 OES, exemplifying sisterhood, unity, and philanthropy. Pat's unwavering commitment to these organizations and her community at large left an indelible impact, inspiring others to follow in her footsteps and make a difference in the lives of those around them.

Pat shared a loving and devoted partnership with her husband, Dewy Howard, for an incredible 70 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, shared dreams, and unwavering commitment. Their union was an inspiration to all who knew them, a testament to the power of love and resilience. Pat was also an adoring and steadfast mother to three boys; Scott, Mark and Eric.  Her unwavering support, encouragement, and unconditional love will forever be remembered by her children and husband.

In her leisure time, Pat enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Pat enjoyed sewing, crafting, and traveling. She found joy in exploring serene lakesides and immersing herself in the diverse cultures of different countries from South Africa to the Bahamas. She was a lifelong learner, always seeking to expand her knowledge and challenge herself intellectually.

Patricia leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. She is survived by her husband, Dewy Howard; her children, Scott (Lynette) Howard and Mark (Bev) Howard; her beloved five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her siblings, Larry Washburn, Gary “Burt” Washburn and Roxy Shea; and a host of other relatives and friends who will carry her memory in their hearts.

In addition to her parents, Pat was predeceased by a son, Eric Howard; two sisters, Peggy Wood and Gloria Nichols.

A viewing service to honor Patricia's life will be held at the Virgil L. Howard Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse on Wednesday, June 14,  2023, from 2-4pm and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will commence at the funeral home on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 11 am, with the Rev. Russell J. Horning, of Shinglehouse, officiating. Burial will be in the Bell Run Cemetery, Shinglehouse.

Members of Eureka Chapter #52 OES will conduct a memorial service at 7:45pm on Wednesday in the funeral home.

In this time of grief, let us remember the light that Patricia A. Howard brought into our lives and find solace in the memories we shared with her. She will be missed for her kindness, laughter, and cheeky sense of humor. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her legacy continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she loved.

Pat’s husband entrusted her care to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
